The 2011 Pacific Pinball Expo Tournament

Think your a pinball wizard? Want to prove it in our Expo Tournament?

We will have a great Tournament again this year at the Pacific Pinball Exposition 2011.  You can win great cash prizes and we will have a different format for the tourney this year.

There will be an Adult division for both Expert and Novice as well as a Kid's tournnament where you can win great prizes.

Tournaments

It’s more fun to compete! This year the Pacific Pinball Exposition will host five pinball tournaments and there’s something fun and challenging for everyone. In addition to a traditional Open tournament and Classics Tournaments, showcasing some of the top talent in the game, Pacific Pinball Exposition will also host a Pin-Tac-Toe fun tournament on Friday, and an affordable one-day, novices-only event on Saturday. Kids can get in on the action, too. Whether you’re an experienced competitor or a first-time tournament player, we have you covered.

Classics and Open Tournaments

$10 entry, unlimited re-buys.  Each tournament qualifying entry consists of four games that the player selects from among available games in the bank.  The player’s performance across all four games relative to the other players determines his/her rank for that entry.

Schedule: Register Friday any time after 2pm.  Friday Qualifying ends at 11 PM, then resumes Saturday at 10AM until 11:59 PM.  After 11:59 PM, all games in progress must be abandoned and scores recorded.

EM Finals will be on Sunday and begin at 10:30 AM

Open Finals will be on Sunday and begin at 2:00 PM, or as soon as possible after EM Finals.

Eligibility: Anyone may enter.

Qualifying: Six games will be designated for tournament play (6 Classics, 6 Open – aka Modern).  The player chooses four games and attempts to complete his/her best 4-game run during the qualifying period.  The top 16 players advance to the Finals.

The top score on each game will be awarded 100 points.  2nd will be awarded 90, third 85, four 84, fifth 83, and so on.

Qualifying Example:  Player Mads Kristensen gets 1st on Klondike (100 points), 10th on Hokus Pokus (78 points), 20th on El Dorado (68 points) and 30th on Jacks Open (58 points).  His combined score is (100+78+68+58) = 304.

If 304 points is among the top 16 entrants at the conclusion of Qualifiers, Mads Kristensen will advance to the Finals.

Finals: The top 16 qualifiers will play in the Finals.

Finals will be played in four 4-player groups and consist of three rounds: Quarter Finals, Semi-Finals and Championship.

In each round, Groups will play 3 games “head to head” with scoring as follows:

1st Place: 4 points

2nd Place: 2 Points

3rd Place: 1 Point

4th Place: 0 points

Groups will be arranged according to the following, based on qualifying rank:

Group 1: 1-8-9-16

Group 2: 2-7-10-15

Group 3: 3-6-11-14

Group 4: 4-5-12-13

Top Seed in each group will choose either the game, or his/her order of play.  If the top seed chooses Order, then the next highest seed in the group will choose Game or Order.  If the next Seed chooses Order, then the next highest seed chooses Game.  And so on, until Game and Order of play is determined for all groups.

Example: The top Seed is Joe.  Joe decides he does not want to pick a game but wants to be Player 4 in the Order (last player).  Game or Order choice then progresses to the next highest seed in the group, Jim, who is 6th Seed.  Jim decides he wants to play Klondike.  Bill is the next seed in the order at 9th.  Since Jim has selected the game, his only option is choice of player order, so he chooses 3rd.  Bob is 12th, so he chooses 2nd in the player order.  Jim, who chose the game, must therefore play first.

Example: The top Seed is Joe.  Joe decided to pick El Dorado as the game.  Jim (6th seed) decides to play last.  Bill (9th) seed chooses to play 3rd.  Bob chooses to play 2nd.  Joe, who chose El Dorado, must play first.

Group-game Selection Order: Group 1 shall decide on a game first, then Group 2, then Consolation Group 1, then Consolation Group 2.

A group may not replay the same game during a competitive round (Semis or Finals).

The four players with the highest scores across both groups will advance to the Final round.

Ties

If a tie occurs, but all players involved in the tie are eligible to advance to the next round, their qualifying rank will determine their finishing order for that round.  Example: Bob, Bill and Joe all tie and will finish 6th, 7th, and 8th, respectively.  Bob was the highest qualifier in the group, so he is 6th.

If a tie occurs, but all players involved in the tie will not advance, a one-game tiebreaker will be played.  The highest seed involved in the tiebreaker shall be given first choice of game or order following the same rules as regular group play.

The winner of the tournament is the player with the most points in the Championship Round.

Prizes

1st Place: 29% of total prize money + Plaque

2nd: 18% + Plaque

3rd: 12% + Plaque

4th: 9% + Plaque

5th: 8%

6th: 7%

7th: 5%

8th: 5%

9th: 4%

10th: 3%

Kids Tournament

$5 Entry, no “re-buys”.  Kids play 2 games 2 times each, and the highest score on each game is recorded.  Scores are ranked and points are awarded.  Final placing is determined by point totals.

Schedule: Register and play on Saturday between 10am and 4pm.  Winners will be announced Saturday night but winners are not required to be present.

Eligibility: Players must be 13 years old or younger.

Format: Two games will be designated for tournament play.  Each competitor plays each game two times (total of 4 games).  The highest score on each game is recorded.  First place on each game receives 50 points, 2nd place 45, 3rd place 40.  Subsequent competitors receive 39, 38, 37 and so on.  Highest point total across both games is the winner.

Prizes: The first 10 Kids entrants who complete their entries will receive participation mini-plaques.  The top 4 finishers will receive finishing plaques and other prizes, as available.

Question: Is there a playoff or finals in the kid’s division?

Answer: There is no Finals for the Kids division due to scheduling, however, the more competitive young guns may also enter the Novice and Open tournaments, which will include Finals.

Novice Tournament

$5 entry, no “re-buys”.  Players play 4 games 2 times each and the highest score on each game is recorded.  Scores are ranked and points are awarded.  The top 12 players will advance to the finals with top qualifiers given advantage in seeding.  Note: World Pinball Ranking Points are not awarded for this tournament, per the rules of the International Flipper Pinball Association.

Schedule: Register Saturday between 10am and 1:30 PM.  No entries after 1:30 PM.  Qualifying play runs until 5:30 PM.  Players are responsible for completing all their qualifying attempts within the qualifying period.

Eligibility: Players may be any age.  Player may not have, or have ever had, a World Pinball Player Rank (WPPR) of 500 or better.  Player may not have ever competed in a PAPA B or A Division tournament.  Player may not have ever finished first in a Novice tournament.  Player may not have ever “placed” (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) in a WPPR tournament.  Player may not have ever “placed” in a League Season, for example: East Bay Pinball League or the Bay Area Pinball Association.

Note: If the above requirements seem at all foreign to you, you can probably compete in Novice.  These somewhat extensive rules are in place to discourage “sandbagging” and a fun time for all entrants who are fairly new to competitive play.

Qualifying: Four games will be designated for tournament play.  Each competitor plays each game two times (total of 8 games).  The highest score on each game is recorded.  First place on each game receives 50 points, 2nd place 45, 3rd place 40.  Subsequent competitors receive 39, 38, 37 and so on.  The top 12 players with the most points will advance to the finals.

Finals: Finals will be played in three 4-player groups and consist of three rounds: Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Championship.  In each round, Groups will play 3 games “head to head” with scoring as follows:

1st Place: 4 points

2nd Place: 2 Points

3rd Place: 1 Point

4th Place: 0 points

Groups will be arranged according to the following, based on qualifying rank:

Group 1: 12, 6, 9, 1

Group 2: 11, 5, 8 2

Group 3: 10, 4, 7, 3

Top Seed in each group will choose either the game, or his/her order of play.  If the top seed chooses Order, then the next highest seed in the group will choose Game or Order.  If the next Seed chooses Order, then the next highest seed chooses Game.  And so on, until Game and Order of play are determined.

Example: The top Seed is Joe.  Joe decides he does not want to pick a game but wants to be Player 4 in the Order (last player).  Game or Order choice then progresses to the next highest seed in the group, Jim, who is 6th Seed.  Jim decides he wants to play White Water.

Joe decided to pick Attack From Mars as the game.  Jim (6th seed) decides to play last.  Bill (9th) seed, chooses to play 3rd.  Bob chooses to play 2nd.  Joe, who chose Attack from Mars, must play first.

The eight players with the highest scores will advance to the semi-final round.

The four players with the highest scores in the semi final round will advance to the final round.

Group-game Selection Order: Group 1 shall decide on a game first, then Group 2, then Group 3.

As soon as a group completes its game, scores shall be recorded and the group shall play its next game.

A group may not replay the same game during a competitive round (Semis or Finals).

Prizes

1st Place: $100 and 1st Place Plaque

2nd Place: $50 and 2nd Place Plaque

3rd Place: $25 and 3rd Place Plaque
