Volley

The Women’s Rights Movement of the 1960’s and ‘70s led to the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match in 1973, which is most likely the inspiration for Volley. World Champion tennis player Billie Jean King played Bobby Riggs who was a US National Champion. King won the match and the $100,000 prize. Bobby Riggs actually organized the match!

In the Morison portrayal, the woman appears to be missing the ball. She’s stretching, but the trajectory is over the racquet. If you look closely at the faces of the men, they’re all cheering, The women in the background have different expressions…
